SURGICAL TREATMENTS FOR HAIR LOSS

Hair Transplant Surgery can give fantastic results, but are expensive and time consuming. They all essentially involve the transfer of healthy hair roots from the sides and back of the head, which generally do not have receptors for DHT hormone, to the areas of hair loss.
1)Strip FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation)
2)FUE (Follicular Unit Excision) previously known as Follicular Unit Extraction.
Above  two are the most commonly performed surgical procedures for Hair Loss.

MEDICAL TREATMENT FOR HAIR LOSS:

If hair loss is not permanent or significant, you may not need surgery at this stage. The hair loss can be slowed or even stopped by tested and approved medical treatments, following a discussion with our expert specialist.  Currently, the only Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved medications for male pattern hair loss (androgenetic alopecia) are MINOXIDIL 2% or 5% Topical Spray/Foam  and oral FINASTERIDE 1mg orally.  There are low-level light therapy (LLLT) devices which are FDA approved for use in treating androgenetic alopecia. PRP (platelet-rich plasma) is also found to produce promising results.

As for any surgical procedure, pre assessment is necessary. You have a consultation with our expert doctor, we recommend this is done face-to-face to fully access the degree and establish the cause of hair loss and then reach a mutually agreed plan of treatment.
Once all assessments have been completed, we can book a date for your treatment to start.

*please read our section of terms and condition before making any booking.

Your surgeon will introduce himself to you and show you the clinic room and explain how the procedure will be carried out.  Please note you will be asked  to verify your identity, therefore please bring ID along with you, as this may cause unnecessary delay to your treatment. There will also be  hair technician(s) throughout the procedure who will assist the surgeon when required. Our hair technicians are very friendly and highly qualified with many years of experience.

STAGE ONE

You will be given a mild relaxant which also works as a sedative followed by local Anaesthesia. Anaesthesia process is slightly uncomfortable for the first few minutes; the sensation has been described as very similar to that which is experienced when undergoing any dental procedure. The procedure of giving Local Anaesthesia starts from the back of head then moving on to the sides of your head. After numbing the back of head, the excision holes are made by the advanced micro punch around the hair follicles. These hair follicles called grafts are then carefully removed and stored in a special solution to keep them safe and healthy before placing them to the area of hair loss in the second stage. A small break is taken, where the patient can sit up, walk around, eat or drink and use the bathroom if needed.

STAGE TWO

Anaesthesia process is repeated to the area of hair loss, usually the front and top of head. The doctor makes the incisions for the recipient grafts. This is a very important step, where our specialist expert doctor works as an artist to make small holes at specific angles to create a design in order to make the best possible and natural looking hair line and at the same time giving our patients a good hair density. The grafts are then placed in those small incisions by our team of highly skilled technicians under close supervision of the doctor. FUE is a very clean procedure and one session can last a whole day (anywhere between 6-9 hours depending on the number of grafts required). You can expect to be on your way home within 30 minutes after completion of the whole procedure. We highly recommend you DO NOT DRIVE back home yourself after the procedure and make other arrangements, due to safety reasons. A taxi service and London Underground Station is located within 5 minutes walking distance from our Clinic.

Follow up appointment is booked before discharge.

Follow up are usualy carried out at 2 weeks, 6 months and 12 months after the procedure.

WE CURRENTLY ONLY OFFER FUE METHOD OF HAIR TRANSPLANT AT OUR CLINIC.

Follicular Unit Excision is one of the two main types of Surgeries, which is regarded as a long lasting solution to Hair loss. FUE is a type of surgical hair transplant procedure which is  preferred by people suffering from hair loss. Unlike, FUT procedure which  leaves a long scar at the back of the head(new tricophytic closure method can leave a much less visible scar), FUE treatment only leaves multiple small rounded scars which can be easy covered by keeping hair slightly longer on the back and sides of the head. FUE has become the preferred choice by people and commonly described as a “Minimal Invasive Procedure” as there are no stitches involved and allows the patient the option of wearing their hair short after the procedure and get back to daily life as quickly as possible, usually after a week  with minimal discomfort.

Some clinics claim FUE is ‘a no scar technique, which is false.  FUE almost always leaves small round scars which, when performed correctly, can be hidden by slightly longer hairstyles. When performed improperly, FUE can result in noticeable hair thinning and can lead to obvious scarring.

LET US TAKE YOU THROUGH THE 3 STAGES OF THE WHOLE PROCESS

Some precautions are always necessary after any surgical procedure.  FUE grafts need extra care and we always give you written instructions of how to look after your precious grafts over the next few days, after which the roots of the implanted hair settle deep in the skin.

It can take about 5-7 days for most of the redness and swelling to subside.

You will be able to contact the our team/doctor for any questions; before, during after your procedure.

MEDICAL TREATMENT

There are many supplements available in the market and consumed by many people, we would highly recommend you seek professional advice before consuming any supplements. Most supplements promise to provide the nutrients which are required for hair growth. There are a few clinical studies to support the use of NutraCeuticals to aid hair growth for example Viviscal Professional is a marine extract which in small studies has shown an increase in terminal hairs and an increase in the diameter of finer hair, as well as a reduction in shedding. There is little or no evidence of prolonged usage presenting any side effects.

This is available in foam or spray type and in two strengths 2% or 5% minoxidil. Foam formulation is generally better tolerated. It must be applied to dry hair at the affected area. It takes typically around 9 -12 months before any improvement in hair thickness is noticeable. Any regrowth of hair is likely to fall out on cessation of treatment and this will be discussed with you and any warnings will be highlighted our doctor.

Currently in the UK, there are no oral licensed treatments for Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL), Minoxidil 2% foam topically, at night may be beneficial however patients will only notice any improvement after 9-12 months. The best evidence base for treatment of FPHL in women support use of topical Minoxidil.  Women under 45 may benefit from an anti-androgenic Oral Contraceptive Pill such as Yasmin or Dianette. It is important to exclude low ferritin or thyroid disease.

Finasteride is an inhibitor 5a reductase enzyme–which reduces the amount Dihydrotestosterone hormone (DHT) in the body. DHT hormone level in our body is thought to cause male pattern hair loss. Finasteride is prescribed as a daily dose of 1mg which needs to be taken orally. The current research has shown that Finasteride can slow down hair loss and promote regrowth, in 65-70% of men who used the medicine. As with minoxidil, loss of hair will occur upon cessation of therapy. Finasteride has a UK licence for use in treating male pattern hair loss.

Approximately 2% of men may experience erectile issues or loss of libido, usually reversible upon cessation of the drug therapy (pros and cons are discussed in detail by our doctor).

PRP- PLATELET RICH PLASMA:

WHAT IS PRP?
PRP (platelet rich plasma) is an advance cutting-edge therapy utilising growth factors present in the alpha granules of platelets in an autologous manner

  • WHY IS PRP USED?
  • HOW IS PRP ADMINISTERED?
  • ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS OF PRP?

PRP is a therapy which will benefit clients throughout their lifetime with repeated treatments.

Measurable results can be seen within 90 days and the hair growth continues to improve over a 6 month period.  Results may vary depending on certain factors such as the general health of patients.

Some of the additional benefits that may be seen are:

  • Enhances new tissue regeneration.
  • Enhanced collagen production (more elastic skin)
  • Promotes angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation)
  • Stimulates cell proliferation (multiplication)
  • Decreases Inflammation (swelling and redness)

A numbing agent might be used if the area is too sensitive or a normal pain killer will work just fine on normal skin. Before the treatment begins, some blood is drawn from your arm and spun in a Machine to separate the red blood cells, white blood cells and Platelets. The plasma with Platelets is then injected back into the area of hair loss. The whole procedure can take up to 30 minutes to an hour.

Side effects can vary between people.
The most common types of side effects include redness, swelling, pain and itching.
The healing time can be different for every patient with the average healing time of 24 hours(on the scalp).

  • EXPECTED RESULTS
  • PLASMA RICH PLATELETS PROCEDURE (PRP)
  • WHY CELLENIS?

Current evidence recommends to have 3 treatments, each 6-8 weeks apart and 4th one after 6 or 12 months.

Most people begin to see results after 12 weeks of PRP treatment. It can help with hair calibre thickness or slow down the process of Hair Loss.
The time for results to be seen will vary between people and it can be several months before many people see any specific results.
More recently clinical studies have been undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of Platelet Rich Plasma on Pattern Hair Loss, with some studies showing very favourable outcomes.

AHI uses Cellenis PRP Centrifuge Machine:

CE marked and FDA Approved.

The anticoagulant used is physiological neutral pH7 which means it minimizes patient discomfort due to less leucocytes(white blood cells), which can cause more inflammation and increased pain sensation.

PRP derived from using Cellenis machine has been used in 2 million cases globally in over 50 countries and it is known to produce safe, simple and efficient preparation of platelet concentration fold of 4-5 times.

PRP treatment has been used or a number of years for burns, skin damage, nerve damage, tendinopathies and bone fracture.

This process is safe, quick and usually straightforward. PRP treatment is available at AHI Clinic and will be carried out by our experienced clinical staff.  Please  Book for a  Free Consultation to ask more details.
